Budget Friendly Hummingbird Nectar
Hi there! If you love hummingbirds but don't love gimmicky feeders and dye filled food, I've got a solution for you! Here's what you'll need:
- dollar store hummingbird feeder
- dollar store cane sugar
- tap water
Hummingbird nectar is a 5 part mixture with 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Example: You could combine 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar for a large batch. Add this to a pot or pan and bring to a boil for about 30 seconds. Mix the sugar and water together as it heats to ensure it all gets dissolved.
I read that the boil is important as it kills off any bacteria from the mixture either in the water or sugar so I always boil mine. It also seems to help make all the sugar crystals dissolve with the water.
If you're not into this extra step, I've seen other people just combine water and sugar. I would do a little research before committing to option number 2 though!
